Our Story
At ISBA Mutual Insurance Company, we specialize in serving Illinois lawyers with a commitment deeply rooted in the legal community. Founded in 1988 by the Illinois State Bar Association (ISBA), our organization was created by lawyers, is led by lawyers, and exclusively serves Illinois lawyers.
Unlike conventional insurance companies, we are not beholden to agents or stockholders; our sole commitment is to our policyholders. This unique position allows us to focus on providing reasonable rates, exceptional client service, and valuable legal education—including the benefit of MCLE credits.
Before our establishment, legal professionals faced fluctuating and often exorbitant premium rates through commercial insurance options. Recognizing the need for a more equitable solution, ISBA Mutual was formed to provide professional liability insurance to Illinois lawyers at fair and stable premiums and robust coverage explicitly tailored to the unique needs of law firms.

ISBA Mutual is a lawyer-owned and directed company that provides high-quality professional liability insurance and risk management services to ISBA members. We serve the changing needs of practicing lawyers who share our commitment to the highest standards of the legal profession. We maintain positive long-term relationships with our policyholders through fair, individualized pricing, unique claims handling, and innovative risk management. ISBA Mutual continues to be a financially strong mutual insurance company serving only Illinois lawyers and law firms. ISBA Mutual is rated A (Excellent) by the independent financial rating service AM Best (with the most recent rating occurring on February 9th, 2024).
We are dedicated to advancing law practice by supporting the Illinois State Bar Association, Illinois Bar Foundation, and local bar associations. Our commitment helps provide educational and networking opportunities, empowering lawyers to excel.
